Lenton Community Family Fun Day 11th June 2017

A great day was had by all at the Community Family Fun Day at Lenton Recreation Ground.  It was heartwarming to see so many members of our local community come together to enjoy the food, music, dance and much more.  Nottingham University musicians along with local children from the Lenton Centre Street Dance class, some drummers, and a balloon man were among the entertainers! A great bbq was laid on by Tommy’s Kitchen and scrummy cakes available from Crocus Cafe.

It was only made possible by a team effort from  Tommy’s volunteers, The Lenton Centre, Dunkirk and Lenton Community Association (DOLCA), University of Nottingham student volunteers, the local Church Communities to name but a few.  Our fabulous Neighbourhood Development Officer, Iffat Iqbal, oversaw much of the organisation and we had local firemen, police support officers and community protection officers to keep a close eye on the goings on! Staff from UoN were there, along with local councillors and a friendly dinosaur from the up and coming Dinosaur Exhibition beginning next month at Wollaton Hall.  There was even a surprise visit from our very own re-elected Nottingham South MP Lilian Greenwood!

The day was a real celebration of the diverse community we have in our neighbourhood.  White roses were handed out in memory of Jo Cox MP, who was killed last year, along with a postcard.  On the card Jo was quoted, saying

‘While we celebrate our diversity, what surprises me time and time again is we are far more united and have far more in common than that which divides us’

That was certainly the case today.
