What is ‘The Triangle’?

What is a PCSO, a CPO, a CPN?
A PCSO is a police community support officer: ‘Day-to-day duties usually include high visibility patrolling, tackling anti-social behaviour, dealing with minor offences, crowd control and directing traffic at public events, helping direct traffic at roadblocks or scenes of accidents, gathering criminal intelligence and supporting front-line policing’ (Wikipedia page).

Police Constables / Beat Officers
Wherever you live there will be a beat officer responsible for your area. In the area focused on by LDNRA, the beat team is based at Byron House and is called the Canning Beat Team. It is headed by Inspector Rob Wilson and our beat officer is PC Andy Hallsworth
The police do deal with crime such as burglary and car crime. However, their main focus is crime resulting in Threat, Risk and Harm.
PCSOs Police Community Support Officer
A PCSO can, for example:
- give someone a fixed-penalty notice, eg for littering or dog fouling
- demand the name and address of someone being anti-social
- issue CPNWs (CPN Warnings) and CPNs
- take alcohol off a person aged under 18
- take alcohol off a person in an area with a PSPO in place
A PCSO can also ask a police officer to arrest a person. The PCSOs work for the police force.
CPOs Community Protection Officers
CPOs work for the council. They work closely with the PCSOs to engage with the public over issues relating to antisocial behaviour.
CPOs are the main port of call for issues relating to waste, noise and antisocial behaviour. Their powers are similar to a PSCO. They can
- give someone a fixed-penalty notice, eg for littering or dog fouling
- demand the name and address of someone being anti-social
- take alcohol off a person aged under 18
- take alcohol off a person in an area with a DPPO / PSPO in place
- issue CPNWs and CPNs
What is a PSPO?
From October 2017, new Public Spaces Protection Orders (PSPOs) have replaced DPPOs as part of applying the ASB, Crime and Policing Act 2014 in the city.
PSPOs relating to alcohol prohibit drinking in all non-licensed public places and makes it an offence for a person not to comply with a request by Police or Community Protection Officers to stop drinking alcohol or anything believed to be alcohol and to surrender anything thought to be an alcoholic drink in their possession.
The penalty on conviction for an offence under the new PSPOs is a maximum fine of £500. A fixed penalty notice of £70 can be offered as an alternative to prosecution. The whole of Nottingham City, including Lenton, Radford, Arboretum and their parks are covered by the PSPO.
